My kids come in, sit down and I do attendance. It takes 30 seconds, they grab their projects and get to work. I don't have any entrance tasks.

Bob,
I haven't forgotten about the plans for wood crate and plastic dish...I've been avoiding school work and concentrating on my new saws. We officially start tomorrow so I will email some plans and photos!

My 6th graders make dice with off-cuts from an 8th grade project, game boards (drill press holes and golf tees for game pieces) and whistles. All simple and they get a kick out of them.

Hey Jon, my students make dice as well. Just curious, do you have them drill the holes and insert dowel or do your students just leave them with the holes? Another method we used last year was to insert brass rod into the holes...looks really cool but one student decided to file the brass down on the belt sander and before I had a chance to say anything the dice started to burn...smart kid, poor choice!

How do you make the whistles? We have recently switched from 4 quarters to 3 terms. I will have an extra three weeks with my students this year and I am looking to add projects. The whistles would be great!

After a great deal of research, I'm going to NAU (Northern Arizona)for M.Ed. in CTE. I am in Canada so a blended program doesn't really work out too well. Wish me luck, I haven't written a formal paper in 10 years.

I just did my first cutting with the excalibur today, what an awesome scroll saw! Considering that we were making do with two delta p-20 saws last year I am excited to see what my students can do with these saws. I'm slowly adding pieces of General/excalibur to my shop and they make some high quality stuff.

I can't believe it but I actually unpacked and assembled three new machines today. I'm excited as it was a last minute grant. My shop (middle school) now has 2 brand new excalibur 21" scroll saws

and a new drill press http://www.general.ca/site_general/g_produits/drill_mortiser/75-260.html

Not any super big ticket items but I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. What new toys did you folks get this year?

Hey folks, good luck this year. I was curious if anyone has advice/experience to share regarding grad school. I admit that I have a slight addiction to education. My wife is doing her M.Ed. right now and I was looking at several programs that I could attend while retaining my full-time gig. I realize that online schools may not have the hands-on learning aspect but I've got that covered already. Anyone on here attended NAU or Ball State? Any advice?
Thanks!

Don't worry, it will get better! As you build the program and the returning students know your expectations your classes will improve. I'm going into my third year at my current school and while the first 1.5 years were rocky at times by Christmas of last year things started to work out well. Be firm and consistent with your expectations and most of the students will come around. Remember, shop is often a class that the badass kids want to take. If you can get them on your side, life will be better for you! Good luck!
