Topic: How do you have your students finish their project
Posted: Thursday, December 17, 2015 8:34:28 AM
I’m experimenting with different ways for my students to finish their projects and was wondering what stain or finish you have your students use. I’ve been using Boiled Linseed Oil but I have more and more students complain of the smell so I’m looking into alternatives. I’m looking for something that is easy to apply, wipe on with a rag, and has a fast drying time. Thanks for your help.

Topic: Shop fee conundrum
Posted: Monday, June 22, 2015 1:47:56 AM
We get around to not charging a shop fee by asking for a donation. Based on the cost of the lumber for the class I divide that by the number of students add $5.00 to $10.00 to that amount and give that as a suggested donation. The extra money that comes in usually makes up for the students who don’t pay or just pay part of the donation. I haven’t had any problems coming up with the money to cover my costs yet. Our district hasn’t allowed us to charge a shop fee for 5 years. I don’t make a big deal if they don’t pay and everybody takes there project home whether they pay their donation or not.

It’s not official until later today but I ended up with 2060 votes which was enough for 2nd place, first place had 2090 votes. My prize is $70.00 worth of glue products. Later in the week the judges pick their winners, a Router and a Router table or a Mini lathe, so there might be another prize for me, we’ll see. Thanks to all who took the time to throw me a couple of votes.

Did some work on the videos and made a Woodshop Channel of three of the projects from above. Take a look and see what you think:

7th Grade Projects
Memo Holder

Casserole Holder

8th Grade Project

Eventually all the projects that we build in my Woodshop will up on YouTube.

I’m up to almost 1,300 votes but that still puts me quite a ways away from 1st place. If you could see it in your little wood hearts to give me some more votes this Woodshop teacher WOOD appreciate it. You can vote everyday. Here’s the link again You can vote everyday. The contest ends February 27th.
